96 Tears takes its title from the raw, heartbroken garage-rock classic by the Mysterians — a nod to the song’s dramatic plea and wonderfully over-the-top melancholy. Here, however, the tears have been transformed into something more structured: an intricate geometric rhythm of interlocking snowflake-like forms, repeating with almost hypnotic precision.
Unlike most of my colourful compositions this has been created in a monochrome palette of charcoal grey, soft silver and off-white which gives the piece a cool elegance, while the dense geometric pattern creates a mood that is both contemplative and quietly intense. It would make a striking statement on a bare wall, whether it was a framed print or canvas, bringing graphic energy to a minimalist space, or suit a hallway or office where its rhythmic repetition can be appreciated up close. A little heartache, perfectly patterned.
